STATE-REQUIRED TRUSTEE TRAINING

State law requires community college trustees to attend a training on governing offered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinatng Board (THECB) within the first two years of service. Members of the boards of regents of the state's public universities are also required to obatin this training.

During the 2011 legislative session, legislation was enacted that added specific topics to the training required for trustees. House Bill 1206, supported by CCATT, requires best practices in campus financial management, financial ration analysis, and case studies using financial indicators to be included in training for trustees. THECB included these new topics in its 2011 Governing Board Conference held in Austin in early November with an afternoon session exclusively for trustees.

This legislation also requires THECB to make the required training available via electronic means for trustees unable to attend the annual conference. THECB has not yet implemented this requirement. CCATT will provide a link to this when it becomes available.
